TRENDSETTERS GUIDES
 
Races will be previewed where they have been run at least three times before, looking at the common trends between past winners of the races. The figure in brackets after the race details shows the favourites past record in the race as a percentage of wins i.e. one win in four races is shown as 25%. Trainers who have won the race before and have a runner declared at the 5 day stage/overnight will also be highlighted. For flat races the best drawn horses will also be highlighted on our drawfacts website here.
 
Hopefully these guides will assist readers to draw up short lists of fancied runners in the races covered.
 

Friday 5th August

• 6.35 - 6f Maiden for 2yo (16%): Of the 6 past winners 4 were 6th or better on last run whilst the others were making their racecourse debuts. No major shocks with all having odds of 8/1 or shorter. Trainer to watch: BW Hills (won 2010).
• 7.10 - 6f Nursery H/cap for 2yo (100%): All 4 past winners were sent off as favourites. All also finished 3rd or better on last run (within last 20 days). Weights carried by winners ranged from 8st 10lbs to 9st 5lbs. 
• 7.40 - 1m H/cap for 3yo (33%): Of the 7 past winners all either carried 9st 5lbs + or less than 8st 6lbs. A last run within 21 days also a common feature.
  
• 8.40 - 1m 4f H/cap (0%): Of the 6 previous races the shortest priced winner was 2/1 albeit generally a larger field than this year. A last run within 45 days was a common feature. A weight of 8st 9lbs + carried by all past winners. Trainer to watch: J Gosden (won 2010).
  

 THURS AUGUST 4TH

• 2.10 - 1m Maiden for 2yo (66%); Race run 3 times before with all winners finishing 3rd on their last run. All backed down to 11/2 or shorter. Trainer to watch: T Dascombe (won 2010).
  

• 2.40 - 6f Handicap for 3yo (25%): Past winners had all raced between 8-28 days earlier. The 5 of last 6 winners all finished 3^rd or better on their last run. Lowest winners weight has been 8st 9lbs.

• 3.10 - 1m 2f Handicap (10%): Few clear trends in this race although all past winners had last run within 41 days. Trainer to watch: J Chapple-Hyam (won 2010).
  

• 4.10 - 1m Handicap for 3yo (25%): Only run 8 times before with all winners carrying 8st 10lbs or more with all having a last run within 56 days. Trainers to watch: T Easterby (won 2004), BW Hills (2010).
  

• 4.40 - 1m 6f Handicap (0%): Race only run 5 times before but has yet to see a winning favourite. Only one past winner carried more than 8st 7lbs. All winners to date aged between 4-6 years.
  

SATURDAY 16TH JULY

Only 4 of tonights races have been run for 3 years or more, they are:

• 6.40 - 5f Nursery for 2yo (31%): Only one of last nine winners carried less than 8st 3lbs with 6/9 winners carrying 9st or more. A last run within 45 days was also a common factor.

• 7.40 - 1m Handicap for 3yo (37%): Just 4 previous races. Past winners had all finished 5^th or better on at least one of their last two runs and were well backed at odds of 7/1 or shorter. A last run within 22 days was also a common factor.

• 8.10 - 1m 6f Handicap (50%): Race only run 4 times before with all winners having SP's of 8/1 or shorter. A 3rd/4^th or 5th place on last start was also a common feature. 4yo have won 3 of the 4 past races. Trainer to watch: T Easterby (won 2008).

• 8.40 - 1m 2f Handicap (16%): Race revised after a break since 2007. All past winners had a last run within 16 days and all had finished 4th or better on at least one of last two runs. Trainer to watch: B Ellison (won 2004).
  

Saturday July 2nd

• 2.15 - 1m 4f H/cap (Fav 0%): Still a fairly new race (first run 2006) with all past winners having odds of 5/1 or greater. 3/4 past winners carried a weight of 9st 4lbs or more. Trainers to watch: B Meehan (win 2008) & M Johnston (2009).
  
• 2.50 - Lancashire Oaks run over 1m 4f (20%): All past winners finished 6th+ on their last start. Last year's runner up (Polly's Mark) is attempting to go one better this year. Trainers to watch: H Cecil (won 2001), J Gosden (2005) & M Stoute (2006).
  
• 3.25 - Old Newton Cup 1m 4f H/cap (10%): Whilst the favourites record is weak it is interesting to note that 7/8 most recent winners had odds of 9/1 or shorter and by adopting this approach we can whittle down the 17 runners to around 5/6 with a realistic chance (hopefully!). L Cumani has 3 wins in the race since 2004 although all previous ones were only 4yo and seemed laid out for this with just one/two prior races in current season. Overall 4yo have won 7/10 races with all others aged 5yo. A last run 10-62 days earlier was also a common factor.
• 3.55 - 6f Conditions Stakes (40%): This is the sort of race that is usually won by good but slightly out of form horses, with no past winner since 1998 following up on a previous win. Trainer to watch: W Haggas (won 2002).
• 4.30 - New race in 2011.
• 5.00 - 5f H/cap (40%): A 6th placed run or better on last start was a common factor as was the latest race being within 7-22 days. Longest winners odds since 2004 was 13/2.
• 5.30 - 1m H/cap (18%): The last six winners all finished 6th or better on last run and all were rested at least 8 days since their last race. Ages of winners all between 3-5 years. Trainer to watch: PD Evans (won 2003).
  

Friday 1st July

• 6.45 - 5f Apprentice H/cap (33%): Race run just 3 times before with all winners to date having odds of 13/2 or shorter. A last run 9-25 days earlier was also a common factor. Trainer to watch: Mrs A Duffield (won 2010).
• 7.45 - 6f Seller for 2yo (50%): Of the 4 past winners 3 last ran 14-21 days earlier whilst the other was making its racecourse debut. Of those with  past runs all had finished 3rd or better on at least one of last two races.  
• 8.45 - 1m Fillies H/cap for 3yo (27%): 7/9 winners had odds of 11/2 or shorter with a similar number carrying a weight of 9st 2lbs or more.
• 9.15 - 1m 6f H/cap (37%): None of the last 8 winners finished worse than 5th on their last run with 7 finishing 3rd or better. A last run 4-22 days earlier was also a common feature in all past winners.
  

 THURSDAY 30th JUNE

• 3.00 -  6f Nov Fillies Stakes (40%): 7/10 winners were backed down to odds of 11/4 or shorter.
  

• 3.30 - 6f Handicap (33%): The last 9 winners all came from stall 8 or higher - albeit size of field much smaller in 2011 so a middle-high draw is preferred. Oldest winner seen at 6 years old.

• 4.00 1m Handicap (16%): Only run 6 times before with 3yo winning 5/6 races to date. Highest weight carried by winners was 9st 5lbs. Trainer to watch: M Johnston - won 2009 & 2010.
  
• 4.30 1m Maiden (28%): All 5/7 past winners were 2nd/3^rd on last start (and were well backed at 3/1 or shorter) although the last two winners have broken this trend being unplaced on last run. All winners had a recent run within last 59 days. Trainer to watch: W Haggas (won 2006, 2008 & 2010).

Saturday 18th June

• 6.15 - 5f Maiden for 2yo (0%): Race only run 4 times before with shortest priced winner to date at 7/2. Two winners were making their racecourse debuts and the others had a 4th place finish or better on their last run. Trainer to watch: P Morris (won 2009).
• 6.45 - 5f Handicap - New Race in 2011.
• 7.15 - 1m Maiden for 3yo+ (75%): Again just 4 prior races and all winners were well backed at 9/4 or shorter. All previous winners were making their seasonal re-appearance and had finished 5th or better on at least one of last two runs. 4yo have the best record to date with 3/4 winners.
• 7.45 - 1m Handicap for 3yo (37%): The 4 past winners all carried 8st 12lbs or more and all had finished from 5th to 2nd place on last run within the last 43 days. Trainer to watch; D Simcock (won 2009).
• 8.15 - 1m Handicap for 4yo+ (50%): All 4 past winners had also won on at least one of their last three starts. Top weights have won 3/4 races and all carried 9st 2lbs or more. A last run in previous 9-44 days seen for all past winners also. Stable to watch: Mrs K Burke (race won by Mr K Burke in 2007).
• 8.45 - 1m 2f Handicap: New race in 2010.
  

SATURDAY 28TH MAY

• (2.05) 2m H/cap (Fav 11%): This has been a tricky race in the past with 3/10 winners having odds of 20/1+ . Heighest weight carried by past winners was 9st 9lbs. Trainer to watch:  M Johnston (won 2005).

• (2.35) Sandy Lane Stks over 6f (Fav 45%): Last ten winners all had SP's of 8/1 or shorter with the last five favourites winning - albeit they had all run well within the last 42 days.
  

• (3.05) Pinacle Stakes over 1m 4f (25%): All 8 past winners had finished 6^th or better on their last race and all but one were aged 4 years. Trainer to watch: L Cumani (won 2004).

• (3.35) Jury Stakes over 7f (35%): 9/10 winners  had odds of 9/2 or shorter.  Trainer to watch: W Haggas (won 2004).

• (4.45) 5f Maiden for 2yo (10%): Only 3/10 winners were making racecourse debuts whilst the remainder had finished 6^th or better on their last run. Trainers to watch : T Dascombe (won 2010) & A Berry (2002).
  

FRIDAY - 27TH MAY

• (6.05) 1m 2f H/cap for Lady Amat Riders (0%): Race run only 5 times before but historically a tricky opener for the card. Past winners all aged 4-6 years. Trainers to watch: B Ellison (won 2007) & R Fahey (2010).
  

• (6.35) 6f Maiden for 2yo (20%): 5/10 winners were making their racecourse debuts whilst those who had won before all finished 6^th or better on their last race. Only 1 winner had odds greater than 7/1. Trainers to watch: R Hannon (won 2003) & BW Hills (2010).

• (7.40) 1m Maiden (33%): All past winners were 3yo with longest winning odds in last 5 renewals being 11/2. Trainer to watch: J Gosden (won 2006).

• (8.15) 1m 4f Maiden (42%): Past winners all aged 3 years. All winners finished 4^th or better on at least one of last two runs. Trainers to watch: M Johnston (won 2003) & B Meehan (2008).
  

• (8.45) 1m 6f H/cap (25%): Past winners were all aged 4-5 years and no past winner had raced more than twice in current season. Trainer to watch: I Williams (won 2009) & J Mackie (2002).

SATURDAY 21st MAY

• (2.00) 1m 4f H/cap (23%): The last 10 winners of this race had all finished 3^rd or better on last run and all had been rested at least 9 days since their last race. Trainer to watch: M Johnston (won 2001, 2006 & 2007 - all were 1st/2^nd on last run and had odds of 4/1 or shorter).

• (2.30) 1m 'Silver Bowl' H/cap (35%): The last 10 winners all had odds of 6/1 or shorter so it may pay to watch the top three or four in the betting market. Also the last10 winners had all finished 1st/2^nd on at least one of last two races. Trainers to watch: R Fahey (won 2006), M Channon (2004) .

• (3.00) Gr 2 Temple Stakes over 5f (16%): The race has only been run here for 3 years (previously at Sandown) thus past trendsstill fairly weak. All three winners were 1st on at least one of last two runs and had odds of 15/2 or shorter.
  

• (3.30) 6f Listed 'Cecil Frail' Stakes (20%): Oldest winner of the race aged 5yrs with 3yo having best record with 5/10 wins. 8/10 winners finished 6^th or better on last run with only 2 past winners making its seasonal re-appearance in the race.

• (4.05) 6f Handicap (33%): The three past winners were all well backed at 3/1 or shorter after finishing 3rd/4th LTO and all carried a weight of 9st 3lbs - 9st 4lbs. Trainers to watch: D Nicholls (won 2008) & E Alston (2010).
  

• (5.15) 1m Handicap (16%): Only run 6 times before but favourites have been fairly unlucky so far. All winners had last run within 21 days. and had a 6th place or better on at least one of last two runs. 5yo have the best record with 3/6 wins to date. Highest winning weight seen was 9st 4lbs. Trainer to watch: R Fahey (won 2006) & Mrs R Carr (2009).

FRIDAY MAY 20TH

No races today run for at least 3 years.

THURSDAY MAY 19TH
 

• (1.50) 1m 2f H/cap (14%): Only run 7 times before with all winners to date aged 4/5 years. Lowest weight carried by past winners was 8st 9lbs and highest 9st 4lbs. Trainer to watch: I Williams (won 2008 & 2010, last years winner Visions of Johanna attemps to follow up this year). 6/7 winners had odds of 10/1 or shorter.

• (2.20) 6f Maiden for 2yo (50%): Race run 4 times before with 3/4 winners having odds of 3/1 or shorter. All previous winners had run at least once before with 3/4 finishing 5th or better on their last run.

• (2.50 & 3.25) 7f Handicap for 3yo (0%): Race only run 3 times before thus data less robust. Common trends to date were a weight of between 9st & 9st 3lbs; a win on at least one of last three races; odds of 8/1+ . A high draw may also be an advantage as all three winners were in one of the highest four stalls. (3.25) 1m H/cap (20%): 4yo are the preferred age group providing 6/10 winners in the race. 7/10 winners had also won on one of last two races.

• (4.00) 1m Handicap (15%): 4yo have won 6/10 previous renewals of this event. Last five winners had odds of 6/1 or shorter and had won one of their last two races.9/10 winners carried 9st 3lbs or less.
  

• (5.05) 1m 4f Maiden (84%): All 6 previous winners had finished 2nd/3^rd on at least one of last two races and all winners were also aged 3 years. Winners odds were all 4/1 or lower.
  

SATURDAY 7TH MAY

2.00 - 7f Spring Trophy (Listed) (20%): All past winners were aged 7 years or less with 4-6yo winning 9/10 races. The last two winners re-appear today being Beacon Lodge (2009) & Lovelace (2010). Interestingly both of their trainers also run a second horse in the race.

2.30 - 6f Maiden for 2yo  (25%): Race only run 4 times before with three winners at 9/2 or shorter so with so many running for the first time it may be best to watch the betting market.

3.05 - 3m H'cap Hurdle (11%): The last four winners were all supported at odds of 10/1 or shorter having finished 4th or better LTO some 22-23 days earlier. Of todays runners Liberate was 5th in the race in 2009 and Green Mile 2nd that day when ridden by Ruby Walsh. Trainers to watch: D Pipe (won 2007), P Hobbs (2002 & 2008)

3.40 - Gr 3 Swinton Hurdle  (20%): Eridicate won the race last year off a weight of 10st 8lbs so has it all to do today off top weight. Only one horse ((Dreams End) has won the race twice since 1986 and that was not in consecutive years. Caravel was 12th in the race in 2009 when sent off as favourite. A weight of 11st or less was carried by 8/10 winners and the last 9 winners had a 5th place or better on at least one of last two runs. 9/10 winners were aged 5/6 years with the other aged 7 years. All winners odds were 16/1 or shorter. Trainers to watch: N Henderson (won 2010), J Quinn (2007) & JH Johnson (2005).

4.10 - 6f Conditions Stakes (20%): 2009 winner Royal Rock tries to win the race again although last dual winner was Guinea Hunter in 1999/2000. Winners odds all 8/1 or less and a 4th place or better on at least one of last two races was seen in 9/10 past winners.

4.45 - 2m 4f Novice Chase (50%): Race only run 3 times before (as a beginners chase) thus limited data here. Past winners all last raced 30-37 days earlier and had a 1st/2nd place on either of their last two runs. Trainer to watch: P Nicholls (won 2010).

5.20 - New race in 2010.

EASTER SATURDAY

  Six races today have been run at least three times before - they are:

(2.20) 2m H/cap Hurdle (16%): All 6 previous winners were aged between 5-7
years. Highest weight carried was 11st 9lbs. All rested at least 10 days since
last run.

(2.55) 3m Nov Chase (66%): All 3 previous winners had also won their last race
some 20-50 days earlier. All winner's odds were 11/4 or shorter.

(4.00) 3m4f H/cap Chase (16%): Again just 6 previous winners - all of which
finished 6th or better on their last completed race. Ages of past winners all
between 6-8 years. All were rested at least 12 days since last run but none off
the track more than 57 days. Highest weight carried by past winners was 11st
11lbs.

(4.35) 2m4f Nov H/cap Hurdle (0%): So far, in 6 previous races, this has proved
to be a tricky race with all winners having SP's of 8-1 or greater. Previous
winners all aged between 5-7 years and all rested between 21-46 days since last
run. Winners weights all 11st 6lbs or lower.

(5.10) 2m4f H/cap Hurdle (50%): All past winners carried a weight of 11st 9lbs
or lower. 6yo horses have won 3/6 previous races with all aged between 6-10
years. A 4th place or better on at least one of last two runs was a common
factor. Trainer to watch: Donald McCain Jr (won 2008).

(5.45) 2m NH Flat Race (30%) 9/10 past winners were maidens with 6/10 winners
making their racecourse debuts - the remainder had all run just once before
finishing 5th or better. 4yo is the preferred age group with 5/10 wins since
2001. Trainers to watch: Sue Smith (won 2008), Nicky Henderson (2009).

Wednesday 23rd March

This is a relatively new meetings and as such only 2 races have been run for the minimum requirement of 3 times:

• 3.50 - 2m 4f H/cap Hurdle (75%): All 4 past winners carried 11st 6lbs or less; winners odds were 6/1 or shorter; all had last run within 72 days; all had finished 3rd or better on at least one of last two races; 3/4 winners were partnered by a conditional jockey. Trainers to watch:K Reveley (won 2010), P Hobbs (2009).
  
• 5.30 - 2m NH Flat Race (66%): All 3 past winners were making their racecourse debuts. Trainer to watch: A King (won 2010)

 SATURDAY 19TH FEB

• 1.40 - 2m Juv Hurdle (84%): Historically a kind race for favourite backers with 7/8 recent winners obliging. Trainer to watch: Ms V Williams (won 2009).

• 2.10 - Gr2 'Prestige' Nov Hurdle over 3m(50%): If all 8 declared horses turn up this will be the largest field since the race started in 2003. Past winners of the race tend to be on the top of their form with all finishing 3^rd or better LTO (within last 14-31 days). Preferred age group of winners is 6yo with 5/7 wins to date in the race. Trainer to watch: D McCain jr (won 2010) & JH Johnson (won 2004 & 2005).

• 2.45 - Gr2 'Rendlesham' Hurdle over 3m (40%): Race moved from Kempton in 2006 and only races run since then are included. All five of these past winners finished 5^th or better on their last run. Trainer to watch: Mrs SJ Smith (won 2006).

• 3.20 - Gr3 'Grand National Trial' chase over 3m 4f (10%): Despite the new name of the race no winner in the last 25 years has gone on to win the Aintree race although in 1993 Party Politics did win here the year after its Aintree victory. Past winners were all in good heart coming into the race having finished 3^rd or better LTO. Nicto De Beauchene is due to run and will be trying to emulate Miko De Beachene (his full brother) who won the race in 2008. Trainers to watch: Ms LV Russell (whose runners include Silver By Nature the winner in 2010) and N Twiston-Davies (won 2001).

• 3.55 - 3m H/cap Hurdle (25%): Of the last 10 winners 8 have carried a weight of 10st 13lbs or less. Trainer to watch: Mrs SJ Smith (won 2003).

• 4.30 - 2m 4f Novice H/cap Chase (0%): Race only run 5 times before but to date has not been friendly for favourite backers with winners odds ranging from 4/1 to 12/1. Lower weighted horses carrying 11^st 5lbs or less have won 4/5 races so far.

• 5.05 - 3m Hunter Chase (25%): With only 4 previous runnings since 2001 past trends here are limited - only notable comment has been that the last two winners were 2^nd favourites and with the favourite winning one of the other races clearly the betting market is a good guide in the race.

  Haydock - Sat 22^nd January

1.00pm - Gr 2 Nov Hurdle over 2m (40%): Statistics relate to Haydock races only, with race run at Wetherby prior to 2005. All five of these winners had a win on at least one of their last two runs with longest winners odds being 8/1. All had last run some 21-43 days earlier. Trainers with past winners and entries this year include N Henderson (2007), GA Swinbank (2009) & D McCain Jr (2010).

1.30pm - Gr 2 Nov Chase over 2m 4f (75%): Race run only 4 times before with favourites having a good record and all winner's odds being 11/4 or shorter. A 3^rd place or better on last run was a common trend and all last ran some 16-25 days earlier. The only trainer to win the race before, with entries in 2011, is D McCain Jr who had three horses entered at the 5 day stage.

2.05pm - Gr 2 Champion Hurdle Trial over 2m (50%): Despite the title of the race this is not a good trial race for Champion Hurdle winners (in the same year) with Flakey Dove in 1994 being the last horse to win both this race and the Cheltenham race. All winners since 2002 had finished 4^th or better on their last completed run with no major shocks with winners odds being 7/1 or shorter. Trainers who have won the race before and have an entry this year include A King (won 2010), N Henderson (2007) & JH Johnson (2005).

2.40pm - 2m 5f Graduation Chase (n/a): New race in 2011.

3.15pm - Gr 2 'Peter Marsh' H/cap Chase over 3m (12%): All winners since 2002 had last run some 14-28 days earlier and this seems to be the most common trend of the past winners. This years intended runners are all aged between 8-10yo and of this age group 8yo have fared best with 4/8 wins although the last 8yo winner was in 2005! The last 5 winning trainers in the race all have intended runners this year - they are JH Johnson (2005), D McCain Jr (2006&2009), Ms V Williams (2007) & D Pipe (2010).

3.50pm - 2m 4f Novice Hurdle (42%): An interesting statistic in this race is that of the 7 past races 3 were won by a horse owned by leading local owner Trevor Hemmings albeit the last winner he owned won in 2006. The race has been won 4/7 times by well backed horses at odds of 4/1 or shorter - all of these finished 3^rd or better on their last run. The other 3 winners were at much longer odds (12/1 to 33/1) with these all having run only once/twice in current season with one finishing 5^th last time whilst the other two had pulled up on their last start. Of the past winning trainers the following had horses entered at the 5 day stage: Mrs S Smith (2003) & P Hobbs (2009)

4.20pm - 2m NH Flat race for Mares (40%): The race was last run in 2006 and of the five past winners four were either making their racecourse débuts or seasonal re-appearance. The other winner had won its last race in the current season. Of these winners four were well backed at odds of 5/1 or shorter whilst the other was an unfancied newcomer at 33/1. Past winning trainers in the race are well represented at the 5 day stage - they are: N Henderson (won 2004 & 2005), A King (2002) & Ms E Lavelle (2003).

 SATURDAY  20TH NOV

• 12.40 - 2m Nov Hurdle (Listed) (60%): Race run 5 times before since upgraded to listed status. Longest priced winner has been 7/1. Trainer to watch: P Nicholls (won 2006 & 2009) whose winners were both sent off as favourites having won their last race some 14 days earlier.

• 1.15 - 2m H/cap Chase (60%): Again race run 5 times before with longest winners odds being 8/1. Past winners had all carried a weight of 11^st 5lbs or more with all winners aged 6+. Trainer to watch: JH Johnson (won 2005).

• 2.20 - 3m H/cap Chase (33%): Only 3 past runnings of this event. Trends to date have favoured younger horses (aged 5-7 years) and those carrying a weight of 11^st 4lbs or more.

• 2.50 - 3m H/cap Hurdle (30%): Race run 5 times before with all winners finishing 6^th or better on their last start. All winners to date were aged 6/7 years. Trainers to watch: Mrs SJ Smith (won 2005), JM Jefferson (2008), N Williams (2009).

• 3.25 - Gr 1 Betfair Chase over 3m (60%): P Nicholls has won 3 or the past 5 races with Kauto Star who was sent off as favourite on each of its wins and was following up either a 1st/2^nd placed run on it's last outing. All 5 winners had finished 3^rd or better on their last run with all but last years winner having had a prep race some 21-27 days earlier.

• 3.55 - 2m NH Flat Race (0%): Only run 3 times before with two previously unraced winners and the other following up on a win on its debut. Trainers to watch: P Hobbs (won 2008), D McCain jr (2009).

 THURS AUG 5TH

• 2.40 - 6f Nov Fillies Stakes for 2yo (77%): Excellent race for favourites with 6/9 winners winning for the second consecutive time. Drawfacts: Low 56%, Middle 33%, High 11%.

• 3.10 - 6f Handicap for 3yo (28%): Past winners had all raced between 8-28 days earlier. The last 5 winners all finished 3^rd or better on their last run. Drawfacts: Low 14%, Middle 28%, High 56%. Trainer to watch: J Given (Won 2005).

• 3.40 - 1m Handicap for 3yo (28%): Only run 7 times before with all winners carrying 8st 10lbs or more with all having a last run within 40 days. Drawfacts: Low 43%, Middle 57%, High 0%. Trainer to watch: J Gosden (won 2005).
