Updated upon request in 2011

Previous race trends can often help provide a shortlist of potential winners in the current year's races where they have been run at least three times. Hopefully these brief pointers will assist race goers at Sedgefield. The figure in brackets after the race details is the favourite's strike rate for the race. Trainers who have won the race before are also highlighted if they had an entry at the 5 day entry stage.

Due to limited use of this web site updates will in future only be posted on request from NRC members - to request an update for a specific meeting please e mail info@northernracingclub.com - ideally at least 5 days before the meeting is due to take place.

 TUESDAY NOV 23RD

Only 3 races have been run in today's format for at least 3 years - they are:

  • 1.30 - 2m 4f Beginners Chase (20%): Race run 5 times before with all winners to date having run some 9-38 days earlier. In addition all winners to date were either 5/6 years old. Trainers to watch: D Mcain jr (won 2007), F Murphy (2009).

  • 2.00 - 2m 1f Juv Hurdle (50%): Race run 4 times before with all winners to date having last run over NH rules some 25-41 days earlier, finishing 6th or better. Longest winners odds were 7/1. Trainer to watch: T Easterby (won 2009).

  • 2.30 - 2m H/cap Chase (44%): F Murphy is the leading trainer in the race with wins in 2001, 2004 & 2007. All of these stable winners had finished 6th or better on their last completed race and were fairly well backed at odds of 9/2 or shorter. Today's stable runner may not meet any of these criteria and as a 4yo is also against it with the youngest winner since 1997 being 5yo. Lowest weight carried by winners since 2000 has been 10st 6lbs. Other trianer to watch: R Johnson (won 2008).

TUESDAY 9TH NOVEMBER

3.00 - 2m 4f H/cap Hurdle (0%): Only run three times before with past winners
having finished 4th or better on at least one of their last two races. All were
also rested at least 24 days since their last run. Winners odds to date have all
been 6/1+. Trainers to watch: N Richards (won 2009), M Hammond (2007).
3.30 - 2m H/cap Chase (33%): Last years winner went off at 16/1 although prior
to that all were reasonably backed at odds of 7/1 or shorter. 6yo horses have
fared well in the race winning 6/9 races. Trainer to watch: J Jefferson (won
2007, also with Schinken Otto who runs today. However previous win was on firm
ground whilst today is softer).

 TUESDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER

  • 2.25 - 2m 1f Nov Hurdle (25%): Favourites have a weak record for this type of race. Of the last 12 races (10 years) 10 winners were aged either 4 or 5 years old so it may pay to concentrate on these runners today. Trainers with past winners include DE Pipe (2008) and GM Moore (2003) although from the younger horses I'd probably side with Ashammar at 11/4 or better.

  • 3.00 - 2m 4f Beginners Chase (33%): Again favourites have a poor record for this type of race albeit only three past runnings this time. Irish trainer G Elliott has not won this race before but his runners have been firing well recently and should be considered. However if avoiding the favourite perhaps the stable to look at is JM Jefferson and based on jockey bookings Lord Larsson may be worth a look at 4/1 or better.

  • 3.35 - New race in 2010

  • 4.10 - 2m 4f H/cap Hurdle (16%): No major shocks in last 3 runnings of this race with only one trainer today having won before - M Hammond won in 2007 and Heart Of Dubai may again run well for the yard, A common trend of the past winners has been a jumps race in the last 45 days (finishing 4th or better) and of those fitting this criteria Lady Wright may be best at around 11/2.

  • 4.45 - 2m 4f H/cap Chase (33%): Again race only run 3 times before. Younger horses aged 5/6 years have won all three races to date and in this criteria Rebel Hunter looks interesting with AP McCoy booked to ride. However with favourite's record not great again it may pay to take on again and with last two winners ridden by a conditional jockey and the Mccain yard firing well Ballabrook may offer slightly better value.

  • 5.45 - 2m 6f Nov H/cap Hurdle (30%): All 5 past winners finished 4th or better on last run and with only one horse having such form today Desert Soul stands out. However all previous winners had also been rested at least 9 days before this race so the quick re-appearance after only 5 days is a concern. If looking for an alternative lower weighted horses have fared fauirly well in the bast and Chestnut Ben appeals most of these.

  WEDNESDAY 26TH MAY

  • (2.20) 2m 1f Nov Hurdle (Fav 60%): 3/5 winning favourites with one shock 40/1 winner and all others being well backed at odds of 100/30 or shorter. All winners to date were aged 5 years or older and all last raced within the l;ast 26 days. Apart from the surprise winner in 2008 the remainder had all finished 3rd or better on one of their last two races. Trainers to watch: G Swinbank (won 2007) & M Barnes (2008).

  • (2.50) 2m Nov Chase (Fav 66%): 2/3 winning favourites with all winners well backed at 3/1 or shorter. Ages of winners to date were all 6/7 years.

  • (4.00) 3m 3f H/cap Chase (Fav 25%): Only one winning favourite from the four past races. Past winners all rested at least 11 days since last race. A 1st/2nd place on at least one of last 3 races seen for all previous winenrs. Max winning weight carried has been 11st 8lbs.

  • (4.35) 2m 1f H/cap Hurdle (Fav 25%): Again only ¼ wins for the favourites here. Past winners had all finished 3rd or better on at least one of their last three races. Trainer to watch: M Todhunter (won 2009).

  • (5.35) 2m 1f Maiden NH Flat (Fav 33%): Favourites record is again modest with 1/3 wins. To date all winners had raced no more than once (includes one debutant) but they were all nibbled at in the betting with odds of 11/2 or shorter. Trainer to watch: G Swinbank (won 2009).

 WEDNESDAY 19TH MAY

  • (6.30) 2m 1f Nov Hurdle ( Fav 63%): 5/7 winners seen were either sole or joint favourites. All past winners had finished 4th or better LTO (within last 24 days) with 5/7 also winning their last race. 5Yo is the preferred age group with 5/7 wins. Trainer to watch: M Hammond (won 2005).

  • (7.00) 2m 4f Beginners Chase (Fav 50%): All 4 past winners had finished 2nd/3rd on their last race. No other common trends in this race.

  • (8.00) 2m 4f H/cap Chase (Fav 0%): Only run 3 times before but trends so far have been against favourites with winners odds all 5/1 or above. All had run within last 30 days and all had finished 4th or betetr on at least one of last two races. Heighest weight carried to date has been 11st 8lbs whilst oldest winner so far has been 8 years old. Trainers to watch: Mrs E Slack (won 2009) & J Wade (2007).

  • (9.00) 2m 6f H/cap Hurdle (Fav 66%): Again race run just 3 times before. All past winners had run within last 19 days and had finished 6th or better on at least one of last two races.

TUESDAY 27TH APRIL

(5.50) 2m4f Maiden Hurdle (0%): No winning favourite in the 3 previous runnings of this race although all were reasonably backed at odds of 11/2 or shorter. All had finished 4th or better on their last completed race. None of the past winners had been off the track for more than 63 days.

(6.20) 2m4f Selling Hurdle (33%): Again no major shocks yet in this race which has also been run thre times before. All past winners had finished 4th or better on at least one of their last two races. Conditional jockeys claiming a weight allowance had also ridden all 3 winners.

(7.20) Durham National - 3m4f Handicap Chase (25%): 8/10 past winners carried a weight of 11st 1lbs or less. Past winners all finished 5th or better on their last completed race. Trainers to watch: F Murphy (won in 2009 with Lucky Nellerie although its now 10 years since a horse won this race more than once), P Bowen (2007), J Wade (2006) and B Ellison (2002).

(7.50) 2m1f Handicap Hurdle (25%): Race run 4 times before with all winners aged 8 years or younger. Only one of the winners carried more than 11st 2lbs. All winners had been rested at least 17 days since their last race.

MONDAY 12TH APRIL

This is a new meeting thus no trends are available today.

FRIDAY 26TH MARCH

Just one race today which has been run at least 3 times before:

(2.30) 2m4f Nov Hurdle (60%): All 5 past winners had finished 3rd or better on their last completed run. Longest SP seen at 9/2. Trainer to watch : JH Johnson (won 2007).

TUESDAY 16TH MARCH

Whilst most eyes are on the festival today the winners at Sedgefield may be slightly easier to find? Here are the profiles for the races run at least 3 times befroe:

(1.45) 2m4f Mares Nov Hdle (0%): Only run three times with all winners backed at 2/1 or shorter thus the 2nd favourite in the race may prrove better value. All placed 5th or better on last run.

(2.20) 2m4f maiden Chase (66%): All three past winners finished 4th or better on last run. All had raced at least 3 times in current season and none had been off the track for more than 189 days.

(3.35) 2m1f Nov H/cap Hurdle (16%): Highest weight carried by winners has been 11st 10lbs. 5/6 yo horses preferred with 7/8 wins between them. Several outsiders have won this race at odds of 16/1 or more so maybe worth having a small ew bet on an outsider as well as your main selection.

(4.15) 2m4f H/cap Chase (0%): All three past winners were 4/1 or greater. They all also had run 1st/2nd on at least one of last three runs. All had been rested at least 14 days since last outing. Trainer to watch: Mrs E Slack (won 2008|).

(5.25) 2m1f NH Flat Race (66%): Only three arces so far but all were well backed at 13/2 or shorter and were aged 4/5 years. Trainer to watch: G A Swinbank (won 2007 & 2008).

SUNDAY 7TH MARCH 2010

Today is a new fixture thus no past trends are available.

TUESDAY 9TH FEBRUARY 2010

Only two races today have been run at least 3 times before:

(2.10) 2m1f Nov Handicap Hurdle (33%): In the past those in middle of handicap (10st 2lbs to 11st 7lbs) have fared best. All had been rested at least 13 days since last run. All winners aged between
4-7yrs. Trainer to watch: R Johnson (won 2003).

(4.10) 2m Handicap Chase (28%): Those at very top or bottom of the weights have fared best in the past. No major shocks with all winners SP's being 9/1 or shorter albeit favourites record is fairly modest. All past winners were rested at least 6 days since last outing. Trainer to watch: T Walford (won in 2006 with Miss Pross who runs today).

TUESDAY 26TH JAN 2010

1.30 - 2M1F Novice Hurdle (80%): All five past winners had finished either 1st/2nd on last completed run and had last raced within 14-58 days. Trainers to watch: D McCain jr (won both divisions of race in 2009), F Murphy (won 2003).

2.00 - 3m3f Maiden Chase (21%): Of the last 7 winners one was unraced but of the remainder 5/6 were placed 4th or better on their last completed start. All had SP's of 15/2 or shorter. 7yo have the best record with 4/7 wins. Trainer to watch: F Murphy (won 2005 & 2006).

2.30 - 3m4f Handicap hurdle (33%): Five of the last six winners had at least one 1st/2nd place on their last three starts. All had last raced within 11-61 days. Trainers to watch: JH Johnson )won 2003, 2006) and Mrs H Graham (won 2002).

3.00 -  2m Handicap Chase (21%): Five of the last six winners had finished 5th or better on last completed run (within last 4-31 days) .9yo horses have the best record with 3/6 wins in the race. All past winners carried 10st 9lbs or greater. * Peter Beaumont will be saddling his last ever runner as a trainer  in this race (Fencote Mystery).

3.30 - Race status changed from a selling hurdle this year.

4.00 - 2m1f NH Flat Race (40%): Two of the last three winners had finished 1st/2nd on one of their first two bumper races whilst two others were unraced. It seems to pay to follw either proven form in earlier races or look to potential in unraced horses. The betting market should proove to be a useful guide as all past winners had odds of 6/1 or shorter.
